Connie Bezzina Amsterdam UMC Heart Center Cardiogenetics

At Heart Rhythm ’26 in Chicago (USA) at the end of April, the Heart Rhythm Society will honour Professor of Cardiogenetics Prof. Dr. Connie Bezzina with the prestigious Distinguished Scientist Award (Basic Science).

Bezzina: ‘Now that we understand that conditions such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) are not always caused by a single genetic variant, but can also result from an accumulation of multiple genetic factors that collectively elevate risk, our research focuses on unravelling this complex genetics — including through the use of advanced DNA sequencing.’

During an interview with the Heart Centre of Amsterdam UMC, she discussed the sense of powerlessness that hereditary heart diseases can evoke, her research, and the importance of teamwork. ‘International collaboration is essential to reduce the impact of hereditary heart disease on patients as much as possible.’
